Brenen Hornstein Autism Research & Education |

What is the BHARE Foundation? The BHARE Foundation stands for The Brenen Hornstein Autism Research And Education Foundation. Brenen Hornstein is my wonderful son that was diagnosed with PDD and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Brenen was diagnosed at about age 3 1/2. My husband Bram and I became determined to find a cure for our beautiful little boy. As the months went by, we searched out and tried many different treatments and therapies. Brenen was getting better, but he was far from being cured. In July of 1999, The BHARE Foundation was formed for a twofold purpose. Our top priority is to fund research that will lead to a cure for autism. The BHARE Foundation believes the answer is directly connected to the gastrointestinal and\or immune system(s). The vast majority of autistic children have some type of immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, very little money is being channeled into this type of research. By forming our own organization, we are now able to direct funds to these types of research projects. Please see the projects we are currently funding and give generously! Our second reason for forming a public charity is to educate. Parents of autistic children need information so that they can make informed decisions about how they want to treat their child. In our personal experience, it seems that each doctor we see, tends to only recommend treatments in their particular specialty. We have not found a single doctor that could recommend an entire treatment program. Our web site is not able to either. However, this site can at least give you information so you may be able to form your own program. While we cannot make any recommendations as a Foundation, we do believe that our children need both behavioral as well as "medical" interventions. Education does not end with the parents. Story after story of doctors telling parents that their child is "just fine and will grow out of it" or "let's wait and see in six months" need to change. We intend to help create awareness so these doctors will be able to recognize autism in their office if it arrives. Early intervention can only be improved if the pediatricians are educated on autism. Furthermore, we intend to help create awareness in the general public. The more people who understand what autism is, the easier it will be to get funds for research that is desperately needed. When we formed this organization, it was our goal that at least 90 cents of every dollar received go toward research. A few cents will go toward education and the rest will cover expenses. Almost everything we need as an organization is donated. We are not afraid to ask, and when we do, most companies are willing to give. We can only find a cure with your help. Please give whatever you can. Yes, we are asking you for help. Money is the first step in finding the answers. If you want to send a roll of stamps or envelopes, that would be fine too! If you would like to earmark your donation for a specific researcher that we are not currently funding, we would be happy to send your donation to that person. Kimberly Hornstein | |
